Aim

The Histoarysk Wurkferbân [Historic Work Group] of the Fryske Akademy has a long tradition in the area of organising lectures and congresses. Typically, six readings are given every year, three by our own members in most cases, the rest by speakers from elsewhere. A variety of subjects come up for discussion: the dairy of Bernardus Furmerius, the falsification of history in Bohemia, relief for the poor in Fryslân in the new era, the eel trade in England, 'Hannekemaaiers' in Fryslân, etc.

A  large-scale congress was organised at Staniastate in 1984, resulting in the publication of a book: Frieslands verleden verkend [Friesland's history explored].
Every now and then an excursion is organised for the members of the work group. Several years ago, for example, the members travelled to East Friesland with Dr. H. Feenstra conducting the tour. The intention in the coming years is to co-operate more with other historic associations in the province.
The board of the Histoarysk Wurkferbân consists of five members.

The work group also makes efforts to co-operate with the historians of the Fryske Akademy. This has led, for example, to a big workshop on the Patriot period in Fryslân. More than 100 interested parties attended from all over the Netherlands.

Anyone interested in history is welcome to become a member of the work group.
