Language in Friesland

A study of language proficiency, use, attitude and identity of a representative sample of the population of Fryslân. In 1994 fieldwork was carried out for this third general sociolinguistic survey, as a sequel to ‘Taal yn Fryslân' (Gorter e.a. 1980 and ‘De Friezen en hun taal' (The Frisians and their language) by Pietersen in 1967. Today we have a unique collection of data over a period of a quarter of a century, parts of which may be well compared. With this research project an answer can be given to the question whether certain tendencies in the language relationships have indeed continued during the 1980s.

An overview of the results has been published in a small book (‘Taal yn Fryslân op ‘e nij besjoen' = Language in Friesland revisited). The results have been used several times in articles and lectures.
